University Hospital of North Tees enhances MRI capacity with £1.6 million scanner upgrade

Thursday, March 12, 2015

University Hospital of North Tees has improved its diagnostic imaging services with the installation of a new advanced cardiac enabled MRI scanner, part of a £1.6m investment by Alliance Medical and North Tees and Hartlepool  NHS Foundation Trust.

The new Siemens 3.0T Magnetom Skyra MRI scanner replaces the existing 1.5T MRI scanner which previously served the hospital and will provide optimum information at diagnosis stage for a range of conditions.

The Magnetom Skyra features an increased Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR), generating high resolution three-dimensional imaging of organs and tissues while reducing examination times.  The improved picture quality and faster image acquisition sequences will increase the hospital’s capacity for routine MRI scanning and reduce waiting times for patients.

Additionally, the cardiac imaging capability will enable clinicians to carry out cardiac examinations and ensure patients needing vital scans will have the option of being treated at a hospital closer to home rather than having to travel outside the region for a diagnosis.

The scanner’s short bore, high speed gradient system, and full range of specialised localisation coils will improve patient comfort, particularly for those suffering from claustrophobia, respiratory conditions or pain or mobility issues.

David Loasby, Director of Alliance Medical said:

“We are delighted to continue our partnership with the University Hospital of North Tees which will ensure that  patients in the North East  are able to access the most advanced imaging technology available. The new MRI scanner will help the Trust to enhance its diagnostic capabilities and meet future demand for scans.”

Dr Matthew Trewhella, Clinical Director for Radiology at North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust said:

"The installation of a new cutting edge MRI Scanner is a welcome development at the hospital and a sound investment in improving patient care and experience.  The new MRI scanner will generate high quality images that will allow the hospital to undertake a greater number of routine and complex investigations.  This greater capacity will allow us to provide patients from across Teesside with a first class service and ensure local waiting times for scans remains low.”
