Alliance Medical is founded by UK entrepreneur, Robert Waley-Cohen. He is repeating a successful formula he developed for a similar medical services company in the US. We build a solid base in the UK and along the way, in 1994, establish the first independent static MRI unit in the UK.
Seeking to build a European base, we embark on a series of joint ventures.
In Italy we begin a co-operation with ETF, a leading Italian provider of mobile diagnostic imaging and, after five successful years, we acquire 100% of the company. In 2004, we buy another Italian healthcare concern, United Medical Systems International. Meanwhile, we’re on the move in Spain with another 50/50 joint venture.
We open the first of more than 50 diagnostic centres in the UK. And we begin a long and mutually beneficial relationship with the Department of Health when we win the MRI Fast Track contract. The contract requires us to deliver 635,000 MRI scans over five years and represents a 16% increase in our capacity.
Our expansion into Europe continues. In 2005, we acquire IHG in the Netherlands, followed in 2006 by purchases of UMS Germany and UMS Netherlands.
Alliance Medical is seen as a highly desirable investment when, in 2007, Dubai International Capital acquires the company for £600m. This makes us the largest independent radiology services company in the world by market capitalisation. During the next few years we continue to consolidate on the continent. We acquire total ownership of our Spanish venture and we embark on a joint venture in Poland. We gain a strong presence in Ireland with the acquisition of Sequence Medical. A move into Germany comes with the purchase of Tomovation and we further reinforce our UK business by acquiring Lodestone Patient Care.
The importance of the work we’re doing with the NHS is underlined by winning a five-year contract to provide improved access to cancer diagnostics for patients in the North of England. We’ll be providing capacity for 48,000 PET/CT scans over the lifetime of the deal. 2009 sees us supporting the NHS PET/CT North initiative, with the win of another major NHS contract running a high-tech scanning centre in Sheffield.
During these years, we win contracts to provide a cardiac MRI centre for the University of South Manchester NHS Foundation Trust, and a static MRI unit at Forth Valley Hospitals in Scotland.
In a major evolution of emphasis, we are shaping up to the exciting opportunities for the healthcare sector opened up by the information revolution.
During our first two decades we grew a substantial international healthcare infrastructure business, a secure platform for the future based on market leadership and expertise. From this position of strength, we are now developing an information business, creatively using the best of the new communications technologies to give more patients the possibility of the very best medical outcomes.
