Wythenshawe Hospital Cardiac MRI

Innovative cardiac services

Key indications for the Cardiac MR service at Wythenshawe

Ischemic heart disease

  • High spatial and temporal resolution of regional wall motion, myocardial wall thickness, and visualization of myocardial scarring (“delayed enhancement”).
  • Visualization of adenosine stress induced perfusion defects

Cardiomyopathies

  • Accurate assessment of ventricular mass, volumes, EF, RWMA, RV assessment and tissue characterisation (i.e. fibro-fatty displacement)

Valvular heart disease

  • Quantification of valvular opening area and regurgitant volume and fraction (good for AV and PV assessment)

Inflammatory diseases of Myocardium and Pericardium

  • Demonstration of myocardial oedema, contrast enhancement and regional scarring pattern
  • Demonstration of pericardial thickening, effusions and adhesions (tagging)

Cardiac Anatomy

  • Simple and complex congenital lesions (eg. post TOF repair, ASD, VSD, Ductus arteriosus, Ebstein, anomalous pulmonary venous drainage, coarctation etc.) insufficiently characterised by echocardiography
  • Aortic aneurysm ± chronic dissection (e.g. Marfan surveillance)
  • Intracardiac SOL (Tumour versus thrombi) tissue characterisation (LE and fat suppression) and first pass characteristics(vascularisation)

General information

  • Cardiac MRI provides very high quality images enabling a swift and accurate diagnosis
  • Particularly valuable for a range of conditions such as cardiomyopathy and congenital heart disease and where other techniques such as angiography prove inconclusive
  • Cardiac MRI doesn't use ionising radiation and has no known side-effects, making it the investigation of choice when patients require repeated examinations over long periods
  • It's non-invasive needing minimal aftercare - patients can typically leave immediately after the scan is completed
  • Targeted at patients in the North West of England and North Wales, thanks to an agreement between the University Hospital of South Manchester NHS Foundation Trust and Alliance Medical

Cardiac MRI facilities

  • Our scanner is a Siemens AVANTO max
  • Gradient amplitude 45mT/m
  • Slew rate 200T/m/s
  • 32 element phase array coil
