Urodynamics (Videocystometrogram)
Overview
This examination assesses the function of a bladder during filling and during voiding- A fine sterile catheter is inserted in to the bladder with local anaesthetic jelly and this is then used to fill the bladder and to measure pressure within the bladder
- Abnormal contractions are recorded on to a computer during filling; the contraction during passing water is also recorded allowing the radiologist to assess whether or not there is any obstruction to urine flow
- Combined with the pressure measurements, contrast fluid is used to fill the bladder so that the bladder neck can be assessed with X-rays at the same time
- These studies can be extremely helpful in determining the causes of incontinence and bladder obstruction
- This test is done under sterile conditions but occasionally patients are given antibiotic cover to prevent any possible cystitis
