The Digital Mammogram Scan
Overview
Our expert radiographers provide professional x-ray services at a number of state of the art centres throughout the UK- A mammogram is a low-dose X-ray to examine the breast
- The aim of a mammogram is to detect breast cancer early, normally by looking for typical signs or microcalcifications (small cysts)
- A ‘digital’ mammogram uses a ‘digital receptor’ and a computer
- This is different from the more traditional mammogram, as those images are produced on a film cassette
- During a digital mammogram (or breast X-ray) a patient’s breasts are pressed between two plastic plates in at least two different positions
- Pressing the breast tissue between the plates improves the quality of the image and means that less radiation is needed
- A digital mammogram can see through dense tissue better than other types of mammogram
