Breast Cancer with Metastatic spread

Patient History
A 44 year old female complained of right breast fullness and slight discomfort in the axilla. Patient had a negative mammogram however fine needle biopsy of an auxillary node confirmed adencarcinoma.

Methodology
A whole body PET scan was performed with 370 mbqs of FDG. The scan was initiated one hour post injection.

Report
The PET scan shows the primary tumour in the breast and local lymphadenopathy in the axilla.

Conclusion
In this case, PET has demonstrated its ability as a functional imaging tool to demonstrate not only the primary tumour but also the extent of metastatic disease.

The patient completed four cycles of chemotherapy and returned for a follow-up PET scan that showed that the disease had responded to the chemotherapy.
