Alliance Medical opens a new PET/CT facility with the University Hospital Birmingham
Alliance Medical and the University Hospital Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) are delighted to announce the launch of the Birmingham PET Centre, the UK’s first managed PET/CT service partnership. This purpose built facility is located on the Queen Elizabeth Hospital site of UHB and will bring PET imaging closer to patients across the Midlands and further afield.
Mark Britnell, Chief Executive of University Hospital Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust said: "I am very proud that we are able to bring this cutting edge diagnostic technology to our patients in Birmingham and the wider West Midlands area. This is the first service of its kind to be located outside the South-East region. At University Hospital Birmingham we are committed to working in partnership with the independent sector in order to provide the benefits of scientific advances for our patients."
The new Centre is opening in early July and will offer Clinicians access to both state-of-the-art imaging technology and an outstanding service, delivered by the UK’s most experienced PET services provider.
“We are thrilled to be working in close partnership with the prestigious University Hospital Birmingham to establish a PET/CT service in such an accessible and central location within the UK. We are committed to providing cancer patients across the UK with access to PET and this new centre is another great step towards achieving this goal.” Jonathan Walsh, Managing Director, Alliance Medical
The PET/CT scanner installed at the Centre is the first GE Discovery ST system with 8-slice CT capability in the UK. Supported by dedicated staff, trained in the most recent PET/CT imaging techniques, this centre will provide local patients and clinicians with access to a truly beneficial oncology service.
Alliance Medical has been providing Mobile PET services to the Pan-Birmingham Cancer Network and surrounding regions since October 2003 and referrals have increased steadily. The opening of this new PET Centre will ensure that more patients in both the NHS and private sectors across the country will benefit from rapid, local access to this important diagnostic modality.
During the months of July and August, the Centre will host a number of Open Afternoons providing visitors with an opportunity to tour the new facility and meet the staff to discuss the services offered.
