PET/CT - Biograph scanner
The primary uses of PET are in Oncology, although it also has applications in both Neurology and Cardiology. In Oncology, the use of FDG PET can detect both the primary tumour and small metastatic lesions in any part of the body.

There is a large body of clinical evidence that indicates that PET has a very significant role to play in the management of cancer patients. It is used in the primary diagnosis, staging and recurrence of a range of cancers. When CT is combined with PET in one system, it provides both anatomical and functional information, leading to significantly improved patient management and diagnosis. In addition, the combination of PET and CT has significant applications and advantages in the realm of Radiotherapy Treatment Planning.

The Alliance Medical Imaging Centre has been equipped with a Siemens Biograph PET/CT with LSO (Lutetium Oxyorthosilicate) detectors. This is a truly "state of the art" system, and it will be the first such unit to be installed in Europe. It is only the second PET/CT to be installed in Great Britain, and the first such unit in the private sector.
