Your MRI Scan
A Simple Explanation MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) combines a powerful magnet with a sophisticated computer to produce pictures of any part of the body without the need for x-rays. The detail in these pictures is so good that the scanner can see a lesion as small as two millimetres, accuracy that helps in the early detection of disease and injury, allowing effective treatment to start sooner. Preparing for your scan Preparation Unless you are told otherwise, no special preparation is needed for your scan and you may continue to eat and drink as normal and take any prescribed medicines. It is helpful if you come for your scan in clothing that has no metal parts, such as zips, hooks etc. If this is not possible then you may need to change into a hospital gown. We also request that you leave any valuable possessions at home. You will be required to complete a safety check form and we may ask you to remove dentures, jewellery, hearing aids, hairpins and eye makeup. If necessary, a parent, relative or friend may sit with you during your scan, subject to the safety check. Safety First Some people may not be suitable for MRI scanning due to the strong magnet. These include patients with permanent ear implants, pacemakers, surgical aneurysm clips, some types of artificial joints and heart valves, metal fragments in the eyes, plates and screws. We are also reluctant to scan women who are in early pregnancy. If you are aware that any of the above applies to you, please tell us. The Scan For your scan you will be positioned on a comfortable couch, which is moved into the magnet. You will experience no discomfort, but during the scan you may hear some humming or knocking noises these are perfectly harmless. The technician operating the scanner can both see and hear you throughout the procedure so if you have any concerns, you only have to say. Depending on the part to be examined, the scan will take between thirty and sixty minutes. Your Results A radiologist will view your results and provide a report to the Doctor who referred you for your examination. You should make an appointment with your Doctor so you can discuss the findings and any action that needs to be taken.
