Cardiology Consultants - meet the team

Dr Matthias Scmitt

Consultant Cardiologist and Lead for CMR

  • Dr Schmitt graduated in 1994 from the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt, Germany and subsequently held junior Doctor positions in Cardiology and Cardiothoracic Surgery in Frankfurt, Freiburg, Ludwigshafen and Blackpool. He undertook a PhD, under the supervision of Professor Michael Frenneaux at the Wales Heart Research Institute in Cardiff from 1999-2003, utilising and refining a technology termed “Radionuclide plethysmography” and studying the effects of natriuretic peptides on venous capacitance.
  • Subsequently, he finalised his Cardiology training in the North West Rotation with an additional Imaging Fellowship at the Glenfield Hospital in Leicester. He is now a full time Cardiology Consultant and Service Lead for CMR at the University Hospital of Manchester (Wythenshawe) with over 6 years clinical CMR experience and weekly 5 CMR reporting sessions. Since 2010 he is also the Cardiovascular theme lead for the Biomedical Imaging Institute (BII) of the University of Manchester.
  • Over the last 3 years Dr Schmitt has successfully established a CMR based research program which equally focuses on participating in and initiating important randomised controlled trials as well as focusing on hypothesis driven mechanistic research. He currently (co)-supervises 2 PhD students, 2 MD students and an ACF and has contributed to Grant Income in excess of £800,000. Dr Schmitt has published around 50 papers on variable cardiology topics including cardio-protection, vascular control mechanisms, platelet aggregation and cardiac imaging.
  • His current clinical and research interests focus on angina pectoris and mechanisms of pain perception, primary heart muscle disorders, myocardial mechanics, cardiac transplant disease and image post-processing.
  • Dr Schmitt is married to his long suffering wife Nicola and has one son (Anton). Together they enjoy holidaying and cycling in the Cheshire country side.
 

Dr Chris Miller

Cardiology Registrar

  • Dr Chris Miller graduated in Medicine from the University of Manchester in 2003, achieving Honours. During his time as an undergraduate he completed an intercalated degree in Physiology, graduating with First Class Honours.
  • He worked as a junior doctor on the South Manchester Medical Rotation and became a Member of the Royal College of Physicians (UK) in 2006. In 2007 he became a NIHR ‘Walport’ Academic Clinical Fellow and Cardiology Registrar in the North Western Deanery and to date has completed 3 years of his Registrar training.
  • In 2010 he was awarded a NIHR Doctoral Research Fellowship to investigate the utility of multiparametric cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) in heart transplant disease.
  • Dr Miller has Level 2 accreditation in CMR, having undertaken a period of training at the Royal Brompton Hospital CMR unit, and is accredited in adult transthoracic echocardiography
 

Professor Andrew Jones 

Consultant Clinical Scientist

  • Consultant Clinical Scientist and Group Leader within North Western Medical Physics at The Christie Foundation NHS Trust Manchester.
  • He leads the Non-ionising Imaging Group with responsibility for scientific support to magnetic resonance and ultrasound to clinical users in the north west of England.
  • Professor Jones holds the following qualifications - BSc MSc CSci FIPEM FBIR and is Head of Physics for our CMR service at Wythenshawe
